Wellmoor was established in 2017 as part of the Development Trust. It aims to bring together the expertise and ambitions of the north east Dartmoor community to support people of all ages to lead happy, healthy and independent lives. It works to enable, facilitate, coordinate and connect health and wellbeing initiatives to meet the needs of people living in the area.
It does this by:
1. Identifying gaps in provision based on local need
2. Promotion of community-led solutions and signposting to local support services
3. Coordinating learning and sourcing training and guidance
Wellmoor has made a number of key achievements so far:
It has worked to raise awareness of local activities and encourage engagement with community groups by creating the Out and About guide, originally published in November 2017 and updated in summer 2019 as the What’s On guide. Distributed house-to-house for free, it provides day-by-day listings of a wide range of regular local groups and events.
In order to better understand local need, Wellmoor conducted a research project into loneliness during February and March 2018. A series of informal ‘Listenings’ were held with groups in and around Moretonhampstead which resulted in The Loneliness Project Report.
In autumn of 2018, Wellmoor became the host organisation for the area’s first Wellbeing Co-Ordinator, who is implementing a social prescribing pilot project.
In February 2019 the first Wellfest took place. Designed to further encourage awareness of health and wellbeing issues it featured talks from a variety of healthcare professionals, performances from local choirs, and offered the public a chance to visit forty stalls showcasing local services and community groups. It was very well attended and feedback was extremely positive, so much so that a second Wellfest is planned for February 2020.
